Cornwall (the south-west tip of England, with more than 300 miles of coastline) is one of the easiest counties in the country to take a dog to the beach, even in high summer. The rules for summer 2027 are simpler than the old "Easter to October" rule of thumb suggests: no Cornish beach run by the council bans dogs all day in summer, only between 10am and 6pm, and only on a named list of beaches.

Cornwall Council (the unitary authority that runs most of the county's public beaches) sets those rules in its Public Spaces Protection Order for dogs on beaches, sealed in March 2026. A PSPO can run for up to three years under the Anti-social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014, so the same order covers summer 2027 unless the council varies it. Every beach and date below comes from the council's dogs on beaches page as it stood in October 2026. The council reviews the list, so check that page in spring 2027, and read the signs at the access point when you arrive.

Which Cornwall beaches allow dogs all year?

Any beach that is not on the council's restricted list has no council dog restriction at any time of year. That includes some of the county's best dog beaches:

  • Sandymouth Bay (near Bude) - wide sand and shingle under the cliffs, run by the National Trust.
  • Trebarwith Strand - dramatic cliffs and a long sandy beach at low tide, south of Tintagel.
  • Daymer Bay - calm, dune-backed sand on the Camel estuary, opposite Padstow.
  • Holywell Bay - the long beach west of Newquay, backed by dunes.
  • Constantine Bay - a broad surf beach near Padstow.
  • Talland Bay (between Polperro and Looe) - twin coves with a cafe terrace.
  • Pendower Beach on the Roseland - quiet, with shallow water.
  • Loe Bar near Porthleven - a shingle bar between the sea and Cornwall's largest natural lake. Swimming here is dangerous for people and dogs alike, so keep it to a walk.

Newquay's big surf beaches - Fistral, Towan, Tolcarne and Great Western - and Watergate Bay are not on the council's list either. They are busy, lifeguarded beaches, and the owner or operator of a privately run beach can set its own rules, so read the signs at the access point before you let a dog off the lead.

Two beaches often described as dog-friendly all year are not. Crackington Haven and Trevone are both restricted from 10am to 6pm between 15 May and 30 September. Praa Sands is restricted from 10am to 6pm in July and August.

Which Cornwall beaches ban dogs from 15 May to 30 September?

Eleven beaches have the longest restriction. Cornwall Council says Blue Flag and Seaside Award beaches carry longer restrictions because the awards require them, which is why this group includes several of the county's best-known family beaches. Dogs are banned from 10am to 6pm between 15 May and 30 September (Saturday 15 May to Thursday 30 September in 2027) on:

  • North coast: Polzeath, Trevone, Crackington Haven, Crooklets (Bude), Widemouth and Porthtowan.
  • St Ives Bay: Porthmeor, Porthminster and Carbis Bay.
  • West Penwith: Sennen.
  • Falmouth: Gyllyngvase.

Summerleaze in Bude follows its own rule: dogs are allowed, but must be on a lead from 10am to 6pm between 21 May and 30 September.

Which Cornwall beaches restrict dogs in July and August only?

On a further 34 beaches the ban is shorter: 10am to 6pm from 1 July to 31 August (Thursday 1 July to Tuesday 31 August in 2027). Outside those dates they have no council dog restriction, so late May, June and September are good months to visit them.

  • The Lizard: Cadgwith Cove, Church Cove (Gunwalloe), Housel Bay, Kennack Sands, Kynance Cove, Poldhu and Polurrian Cove.
  • Falmouth and the Roseland: Castle Beach, Maenporth, Swanpool, Tunnel Beach, Summer's Beach (St Mawes) and Tattam's Beach (Portscatho).
  • Mount's Bay and Penwith: Mousehole to Skilly, Wherry Town to Battery Rocks (Penzance), Longrock to Marazion, Perranuthnoe, Praa Sands, Porthleven West, Porthcurno and Porthgwarra.
  • St Ives and Hayle: Porthgwidden, St Ives Harbour, and Harveys Towans to Godrevy Point.
  • North coast: Chapel Porth (St Agnes), Portreath (including the harbour), Porth (Newquay) and St George's Well (Padstow).
  • South-east Cornwall: Cawsand, Hoodny Beach and Portwrinkle Harbour, Porthpean, Portmellon Cove and Readymoney Cove (Fowey).

Three wildlife sites near Hayle - Carnsew Pool, Copperhouse Pool and the Hayle Estuary - ban dogs all day, all year, to protect wading birds.

How do the 10am to 6pm hours work?

On every seasonal beach the ban covers 10am to 6pm only. Before 10am and after 6pm, dogs are welcome even on Porthminster or Polzeath in August. That suits most dogs anyway: the sand is cooler on their paws, the beach is quieter, and in most places the car parks are easier before the day-trippers arrive.

The restriction covers the beach itself, not the coast path above it. If you are walking the South West Coast Path past a restricted beach in the middle of the day, stay on the path and come back down in the evening.

What happens if you break the rules?

Breaking a PSPO is a criminal offence. Council enforcement officers can issue a fixed penalty notice of up to £100, the most the 2014 Act allows, and a case that goes to court can mean a fine of up to £1,000. The order sets out its own exemptions. If you are travelling with an assistance dog, read the order itself, linked from the council page, before your trip.

Which dog-friendly pubs and cafes sit near the year-round beaches?

A beach day in Cornwall is better when the pub at the end also takes the dog. A few reliable options near the beaches above:

  • Coombe Barton Inn at Crackington Haven - dog-friendly bar two minutes from the beach.
  • The Mill House Inn at Trebarwith - dogs in the bar and on the terrace.
  • Talland Bay Hotel bar - dogs welcome in the bar and on the lawn, with a view of the cove.
  • The Logan Rock Inn at Treen (near Porthcurno) - traditional dog-friendly pub a mile inland from the cliff path.

Phone ahead in school-holiday weeks to check the dog policy at the table area you want.

When does the Cornwall summer dog ban start and end in 2027?

It depends on the beach. On the 11 busiest beaches, dogs are banned from 10am to 6pm between Saturday 15 May and Thursday 30 September 2027. On 34 more beaches, the ban runs from 10am to 6pm between Thursday 1 July and Tuesday 31 August. Outside those hours dogs are welcome. Cornwall Council publishes the current list on its dogs on beaches page.

Are dogs allowed on Porthminster or Fistral in summer 2027?

Porthminster in St Ives is restricted from 10am to 6pm between 15 May and 30 September, so take dogs there early in the morning or in the evening. Fistral in Newquay is not on the council's restricted list. Check the signs at the beach for any local rules.

Is Watergate Bay dog-friendly in summer?

Watergate Bay is not on the council's list of restricted beaches, so the council's summer ban does not apply there. It is a busy beach with lifeguard zones and watersports, so keep your dog under close control and follow any signs at the access points.

Can I take my dog on Cornwall beaches before 10am in summer?

Yes. Every seasonal restriction on the council's list runs from 10am to 6pm, so dogs are welcome before 10am and after 6pm on all of them. The only all-day bans are at three wildlife sites near Hayle: Carnsew Pool, Copperhouse Pool and the Hayle Estuary.

Do Cornwall's beach restrictions apply to assistance dogs?

The council's dogs on beaches order sets out who is exempt. The full order is linked from the council's dogs on beaches page, so read it before you travel to confirm how it treats assistance dogs.
