Heading north to the Lake District

The M6 is Britain's longest motorway, running around 230 miles from the Midlands to the Scottish border, so there is no shortage of places to break the journey with a dog. The northern half, from Lancashire up into Cumbria, has the best stops.

The clear standout is Tebay (J38-39), run independently by the Westmorland family and regularly named the best services in Britain. It has a designated dog-walking area, landscaped grounds and an outdoor terrace overlooking a duck pond - a genuinely pleasant walk rather than a strip of grass by the car park. Dogs are welcome in the foyer and outdoor areas, though not in the farm shop or kitchen. The northbound and southbound sides are separate, and both welcome dogs.

Killington Lake (J36-37, Roadchef, southbound only) is the other highlight: it sits beside a reservoir with public access, giving it the best on-site green space and picnic area of any M6 service, set well back from the traffic. Further south, Burton-in-Kendal (J35-36, Moto), Lancaster (Forton) (J32-33, Moto) and Charnock Richard (J27-28, Welcome Break) all have grassy dog-walking areas and welcome dogs in their outdoor seating.

Continuing over the border into Scotland

Southwaite (J41-42, Moto) is the last M6 services before the motorway reaches Gretna and the Scottish border, making it the natural final leg-stretch on the way north, or the first stop for dogs heading south out of Scotland. Like the rest of the route it has an outdoor dog-walking area, with assistance dogs only inside the building.

Heading south through Cheshire and the Midlands

The southern half of the M6, through Cheshire and the Midlands, is busier and more built-up, but every main services still has somewhere to walk a dog. Knutsford (J18-19, Moto), Sandbach (J16-17, Roadchef) and Keele (J15-16, Welcome Break) break up the Cheshire stretch. Around Stafford there are two separate stops - Stafford North (Moto) and Stafford South (Roadchef), both between junctions 14 and 15.

Nearer Birmingham, Hilton Park (J10A-11, Moto) and Corley (J3-3A, Welcome Break) are the main choices, while Norton Canes (T6-7, Roadchef) sits on the M6 Toll for drivers using that route. All have grassy areas near the car parks for a quick leg-stretch; look for the signposted dog-walking spots at the larger sites. As at every UK services, only assistance dogs may go inside, so plan to eat outside or take food back to the car.

Motorway services etiquette with a dog

Keep your dog on a lead at all times

Services sit right beside fast-moving traffic and slip roads - never let a dog off near a car park.

Use the designated dog-walking area

Most M6 services have a marked grassy area away from the fuel forecourt.

Always clean up

Carry bags and use the bins provided to keep the walking areas usable.

Never leave your dog in a hot car

Even a short shop stop can be dangerous in warm weather - take turns or keep it brief and shaded.

Carry water and a travel bowl

Offer a drink at each stop, especially on longer runs and in summer.
