This two-bedroom terraced house a few minutes west of Derby city centre is one of the better-provisioned dog-friendly lets in the city, and the provisioning is the point. Guests arriving with a dog find bowls, dog bags and a ball already waiting alongside the human welcome tray, which is a level of thought most self-catering houses do not bother with.

The garden does the heavy lifting. It runs in three walled tiers behind the house and guests travelling with dogs describe it as genuinely secure, including with dogs their owners rate as escape artists. A small park sits directly opposite the front door for a last-thing-at-night trip out, and Markeaton Park, which is a proper walk rather than a green square, is a short distance away. The street is a dead end, so there is no passing traffic to worry about when you open the door, and parking is right outside.

Inside, the house is decorated with some care and is comfortable rather than minimal, with a well-stocked kitchen and a pantry the host keeps topped up. It reads as a home rather than a rental, which suits a dog that settles better somewhere lived-in.

Two things to plan around. There are a lot of steep steps, inside and out, which is worth knowing if your dog is elderly, arthritic or very small. And because the house genuinely does take dogs, guests occasionally find hair on the dark stair carpet from a previous stay; most treat it as the price of a dog-friendly let, but it is there. No pet fee, weight limit or breed restriction has been published, so confirm those with the owner when you book.

Best suited to a couple, solo traveller or small family who want a quiet, well-equipped base within walking distance of Derby, and who do not need step-free access.
