17 Mill Green is a renovated cottage a few minutes' flat walk from the centre of Lyme Regis, and its single biggest asset for dog owners is a fully enclosed garden. Guests travelling with dogs return to that point again and again: the garden is secure enough to open the back door and let the dog potter about unsupervised, which is rarer than it should be in a town-centre holiday let.
The second asset is the parking. The cottage has its own space at the bottom of the garden, and anyone who has tried to park in Lyme Regis in August will understand why that keeps coming up. It also means you can unload the dog, the crate and the luggage without a hike up the hill.
Inside, the cottage has been refurbished with a new kitchen, bathroom and en suite, and is described as spotlessly clean, comfortably furnished and thoughtfully equipped. The bed comes in for particular praise. Dogs are welcome throughout, and several parties have rebooked on the strength of a stay, some of them treating it as their standing base in the town.
For walks, the position is hard to beat. The sea and the Cobb are five minutes downhill, and a footpath runs straight out of the cottage up the valley to Uplyme, which gives you a proper hour or two of countryside walking without moving the car. Lyme Regis beach carries seasonal dog restrictions over the summer, so check the dates before you travel in high season.
Two things to plan around. The conservatory dining room gets very hot in direct sun and becomes unusable in the middle of the day, and there is no shade in the garden - both worth knowing if you are travelling with a dog that struggles in heat. There is also no washing machine, which is felt most on a longer stay with a muddy dog.
