1A Market Square, Tideswell

1A Market Square is a small cottage on the square in Tideswell, a Peak District village between Buxton and Bakewell that most people know for the size of its church. The cottage runs over three floors and is comfortable for two adults and a dog; more than that and it starts to feel tight.

What dog owners come back for is the village as much as the cottage. Walks start from the door into Tideswell Dale and the limestone country around it, there are several dog-friendly pubs and cafes within a few minutes' walk, and the owners give arrival advice on where to take a dog for an evening walk when it is already dark, which is the sort of thing you only appreciate on a winter break. Guests travelling with dogs also mention a bowl of water put out alongside the welcome bottle of wine, and folders of local walk notes left in the property.

The outdoor space has changed over time and it is worth knowing which version you are getting. Earlier stays described the small area outside as completely open onto the square with no fence or gate, next to a road that gets busy; more recent stays report a wrought iron gate now fitted, which made the difference for their dog. Confirm it with the owners if letting the dog out unsupervised matters to you.

The church bells are the other thing. They sound every quarter of an hour around the clock, with bell-ringing practice on Friday evenings, and guests split between finding that charming and finding it intrusive overnight. Feedback on the soft furnishings is mixed too, with the carpets and sofas described as ready for a deep clean, which is a fair thing to expect of a cottage that takes dogs but worth setting expectations on.

Best suited to a couple with one dog who want a Peak District base with walking, pubs and a shop on the doorstep, and who do not need enclosed outdoor space.
