2 The Elms is a self-catering apartment on Devon Road, a few minutes from the middle of Salcombe, and it suits dog owners for a straightforward reason: nearly everything you need on a dog holiday is within walking distance of the front door. Shops, cafes and the harbour are all close enough that the car can stay put once you have arrived, which is the difference between a relaxed week and a fiddly one when there is a dog in tow.

One well-behaved pet is welcome. The owners have not published a pet fee, a weight limit or any breed restrictions, so those are worth settling when you book. Outside space is a small patio courtyard plus a balcony, both furnished - pleasant for a coffee while the dog stretches out in the sun, though neither is a garden a dog can be turned loose in.

Dog owners who have stayed describe the apartment as comfortable and genuinely welcoming rather than merely tolerant, and they pick out the same practical strengths: it is clean, it is well equipped for either a couple of nights or a fortnight, and it comes with parking. Parking counts for more in Salcombe than it sounds, where the streets are narrow and steep and the public car parks fill early in summer.

For walks, the estuary shoreline and the South West Coast Path are both easy to reach on foot, and there are sandy coves within a short drive. As across much of the South Devon coast, some beaches limit dogs during the summer season, so check the current rules for the beach you have in mind before you set off.

It suits a couple or a small family travelling with one settled dog who is happy in a flat and does not need a lawn to run on. If secure outdoor space at the door is what you are after, one of the houses in the town will serve you better.
