The garden is the reason to book it: walled and fenced on every side, opening straight off a south-facing conservatory, so the door can be left open and the dog can come and go while you sit and watch the floodlit church spire. Guests travelling with dogs mention again and again that it is genuinely escape-proof, which is not something every listing claiming an enclosed garden can back up.
The welcome is unusually generous. Alongside the bread, eggs, cheese and wine left for the humans, dogs get towels, treats, toys and a water bowl, and there are throws over the furniture so nobody has to worry about muddy paws. Up to three pets can stay, which makes this one of the easier options in the area for a multi-dog household.
Being all on one level matters more than it sounds. Owners of older dogs, and of short-legged breeds that find stairs awkward, pick this cottage for exactly that reason. Outside the door, Boxford has two shops, a butcher, a cafe and a handful of pubs, at least two of which welcome dogs, though food is served only on certain evenings at the village pub. There are off-lead walks about five minutes away and a footpath across the playing fields, and the countryside around Flatford, Dedham and Lavenham is close enough for easy day trips.

Housekeeping has been inconsistent: separate parties have arrived to find dog hair in the shower or on the rugs, a lingering dog smell in the sofa covers, cobwebs and dust, and on one stay weeds across the entrance and mess left in the garden by earlier guests. The single parking space is also tight and has to be reversed into, which rules out larger cars.
