How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 1 pet-mention guest review sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 3 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 7.0/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet-friendly summary
Appletree Cottage is a restored 17th-century cottage sitting on the village green at Westleton, and the enclosed garden is the part that matters most if you are bringing a dog. It is south facing and generously sized, with room for a dog to actually run rather than just stand about, and being properly enclosed means the back door can be left open on a warm afternoon.
Inside it is old-cottage in character, with exposed beams, an inglenook fireplace and original brick flooring underfoot. Brick and tile is forgiving flooring after a muddy walk, which is not nothing on this stretch of coast.
Guest feedback on this cottage is limited, and it is worth being straight about what it says. A guest travelling without a dog found a noticeable dog odour indoors and would have preferred a pet-free property. Read the other way, that confirms dogs genuinely do stay here and are not a rare exception - but if you or anyone in your party is sensitive to that, it is a real consideration. The same guest found the bedrooms short on storage and the dining area small, and thought the cottage tight for a full four adults despite the listed capacity. Photographs on some listings are also out of date.
Westleton sits a few miles inland, which keeps it quiet. The heath immediately around the village gives easy lead walking, and the coast at Dunwich is a short drive. One thing to plan around: the RSPB reserve nearby restricts where dogs can go, so do not build a walking itinerary around it without checking the current rules first.
The number of dogs allowed is stated inconsistently across booking listings, so confirm it directly rather than assuming. Best suited to a couple or a small family with one dog who want a quiet village base with a garden that earns its keep.
