How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 4 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 7.0/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Balmeanoch is a superb spot for walking with a dog, set alone on a hillside above the south shore of Loch Earn. Guests who brought their dogs love it for the scenery, the silence and the walks that start at the gate, and give it a 4.7/5 paw rating. That score comes from guests who were there for the setting, though, and the cottage itself has a mixed record.
There is no published pet policy for the cottage, so check the number of dogs allowed and any charge when you book.
For dogs, the basics are good. There is a secure, good-sized garden at the back where dogs can potter safely, the loch is at the bottom of the track, and the path up Ben Vorlich starts about ten minutes' walk away. This is farmland, with sheep, cows and deer all around and red squirrels in the woods, so most dogs will need to stay on a lead beyond the garden. The cottage is warm, with plenty of radiators, a woodburner with a good supply of logs, and a welcome of jam and biscuits from the owners.
The caveats are serious, and they are why this page should not be read on the paw rating alone. Cleanliness is the recurring complaint: guests describe grime built up in corners and on surfaces, cobwebs, damp and mould in the bathroom, dog hair embedded in the downstairs carpets and the remains of a previous visitor's dog mess beside a chest of drawers. One stay was spoiled by mice in the kitchen. Some guests arrive with their own cleaning kit. The access is a long, steep and uneven track, there is no freezer, and shops are around twenty minutes away, so stock up in Crieff or Callander.
For hardy walkers with a dog who care more about the hills and the loch than the interior, Balmeanoch delivers a memorable setting. Anyone who wants a spotless cottage should look elsewhere.
