Beam End, Snainton

Beam End is a modern two-bedroom stone cottage on Snainton's High Street, in the strip of villages between Scarborough and Pickering at the southern edge of the North York Moors. It is a comfortable, well-kept place that welcomes dogs, and the owners are the sort who leave a welcome box out and answer the phone when something needs sorting.

Inside it is genuinely good. The cottage has been refurbished to a high standard, is consistently described as spotless, and the kitchen is properly equipped for self-catering. Guests arriving with dogs mention the welcome touches - tea, coffee, biscuits and seasonal extras - and how easy the owners are to deal with. It earns a 4.3/5 paw rating from guests who brought dogs.

The location works well for touring. Scarborough, Filey and the moors are all inside half an hour, Dalby Forest is close for longer walks, and the village has a pub and a fish and chip shop within a couple of minutes.

Now the part that matters most if you are travelling with a dog, and it is the one thing this cottage cannot offer: there is no enclosed outdoor space. More than one guest with a dog has arrived expecting a garden and found none, and the cottage fronts directly onto a main road carrying steady traffic and noise. That combination means every toilet break is a lead walk onto a busy road, which rules the place out for a puppy, a bolter, or anyone who wanted somewhere the dog could potter outside. Guests also report a charge of around 20 pounds per dog per stay added on top of the booking, which is fair enough but is not always clear up front, so confirm it when you book.

Best suited to one or two people with a road-savvy, settled dog who will be out walking the moors and coast all day and only sleeping here.
