Worth knowing
- Paw rating is based on 3 reviews - limited sample, treat as directional

How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 33 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 8.7/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: August 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
The Bearded Goat Den is a compact modern cottage on the Dorset side of the Hampshire border, a few miles south-west of Ringwood at St Leonards, and its main asset for dog owners is outside rather than in. Guests travelling with dogs come back to the garden more than anything else - a generous outdoor space that they rate well above what the size of the property would lead you to expect, and which the listing itself rather undersells.
Dogs are welcomed, but nothing is published about fees, weight limits or how many are allowed, so confirm the terms directly if you are bringing more than one. Dog bowls are not provided either, going by guests who have gone looking for them, so pack your own.
The New Forest is the obvious draw and it is close - open heath and gravel tracks within a short drive, and the Dorset coast not much further. The cottage itself is warm, modern and well kept, with parking, decent WiFi and a bench outside for breakfast in the sun.
Two caveats are worth taking seriously. The interior is genuinely small, and dog owners have said the listing photographs make it look larger than it is, so a big dog plus a full family will feel tight. The bedroom door latch has also been reported as not catching, which matters more with a dog than without: if you are counting on shutting the dog out of the bedroom overnight, that plan may not hold.
Best suited to a couple with one dog who intend to spend their days out in the Forest and want somewhere quiet with outdoor space to come back to. It earns 4.3/5.
