How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 259 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.3/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
This modern cottage in Ashbourne is a convenient, good-value base for a dog-walking break in the southern Peak District. It is a few minutes on foot from the town centre and a large park, with the Tissington Trail close at hand, and guests who brought dogs gave it a solid 4.3/5 paw rating.
Dog owners are pleased with the location above all. Long walks start almost from the door, the town has plenty of cafes and shops, and the open-plan living space is warm and easy to keep tidy. Parking is right outside, though on a slope and tight to turn.
The garden is the thing to know about. It is shared in layout with the neighbouring property, divided only by a low fence, and there is no gate at the side. Guests travelling with dogs repeatedly flagged that their dogs could hop between gardens, and others noticed dogs from next door wandering in. A dog that is good on a lead or not a jumper will be fine; an escape artist will need supervising every time it goes out.
Cleaning has also drawn some criticism. Guests have mentioned dog hair left on bedroom carpets, musty bedding that may have come from a previous guest's dog, crumbs around the toaster and food left in the freezer. Kitchen kit is basic and storage is limited.
For a couple with a calm dog who want to walk the Tissington Trail and enjoy Ashbourne itself, it is a practical choice. Owners of larger or more adventurous dogs should weigh up the open garden first.
