The Black Bull Inn and Hotel

The Black Bull Inn and Hotel is an historic country pub in the centre of Coniston village, on Yewdale Road within walking distance of the lake, the Old Man of Coniston ascent and the village shops. It has welcomed dogs across its rooms for a long time, with a mix of accommodation including a separate small annexe room that some guests with dogs have specifically preferred for the privacy.

The pet-welcome itself comes through as warm and informal rather than systematic. Recent pet-travelling guests have described staff making a fuss of their dogs on arrival, dogs welcomed in the bar and around the pub, and breakfast service consistently called out as a highlight. The location at the foot of the Old Man works particularly well for fell-walking-led stays, and the village amenities (lakeshore, cafes, the steam yacht jetty) are all within a short walk.

Two honest caveats worth knowing before booking. First, the rooms are small in places - one couple travelling with a dog reported the room being a bit awkward to move around with a pet plus luggage. The separate small annexe across the courtyard is the better choice for guests wanting more space (or quiet from the bar below). Second, room cleanliness has not been completely consistent in the dog-allocated rooms - one recent guest reported sticky surfaces and grubby cushions on a dog-room stay. Ask the host about a freshly-cleaned room when booking if standards are a concern.
