How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 14 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.9/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: August 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Blacklaines Annexe is a self-contained annexe attached to a house in Birdlip, high on the Cotswold escarpment above Gloucester. The walking is the reason to bring a dog here: the Cotswold Way runs along the ridge nearby, Crickley Hill and the beech woods on the scarp are close, and guests who have stayed with a dog come back to it, some more than once.
Dogs are welcome and the annexe is set up sensibly for one - a self-contained space with its own entrance and parking right outside, so there is no shared hallway and nobody else's door to pass. The hosts are the other half of the appeal. Guests arrive to a welcome pack that goes well beyond the usual, with milk, tea, coffee, butter and home-made cake, and the hosts are good for local recommendations, including food and drink within a couple of minutes' walk.
The thing to weigh carefully is that the annexe has no private outside space. There is no garden to let a dog out into last thing at night, so every trip outside is a proper walk on a lead, and that is a different proposition in January than in June. The parking area is also unlit, which makes arriving after dark more awkward than it needs to be.
Inside, the annexe is modern, spacious for its size, warm and very clean - cleanliness comes up in almost every stay. The television signal is poor and there is no useful public transport, so a car is essential. Blacklaines Annexe earns a 4.5/5 paw rating, and it suits a couple with a well-settled dog who want a comfortable Cotswolds base for walking, and who do not need a garden on the doorstep.
