Borthwen is a whole house rather than a room, and its position does most of the work for dog owners. There is a small park area and the beach directly across the road, so the first walk of the day is a matter of crossing the street rather than loading the car. Private parking on site and a double garage underneath mean wet coats, towels and muddy paws have somewhere to go.
The layout suits a dog. Rooms are generous, the kitchen is well equipped, and there is enough floor space downstairs that a dog bed does not end up in a doorway. Guests arriving with dogs single out the layout as the thing that made the stay easy. It earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
Barmouth itself is a good base for a dog. The sunset views over the estuary from the house are genuinely worth the trip, and the Mawddach Trail runs along the estuary for a flat, traffic-free walk of whatever length suits. The beach is long enough to find quiet stretches outside peak season.
The gaps are all practical ones. There is no vacuum cleaner or mop in the house, which is a real omission in a property that accepts dogs, since sand and hair come in off that beach and there is nothing to clear them with. Bring a brush if you are house-proud. There is no information pack either, so the heating controls take some working out. A lingering pet smell has also been noticed, which suggests the cleaning between stays does not always keep pace with the dogs coming through.
