Bwthyn Eisteddfa Fach is a spacious cottage on a working farm in the Preseli Hills, a few minutes from Eglwyswrw and within easy reach of Newport, Cardigan and the Pembrokeshire coast. The draw for dog owners is the setting: sheep fields on three sides, hill walking from the door, and a picture-window view that guests tend to spend much of the stay looking at. The cottage takes one well-behaved dog.
Inside it is warm and generous, with a log burner, underfloor heating, a well-equipped kitchen and a hot tub the owners check regularly, and the welcome pack of milk, eggs, butter and Welsh cakes gets a mention in most reviews. The owners farm next door, introduce themselves on arrival and then leave guests to it.
The garden is where you need to pay attention. It is grassed, partly enclosed and fine for a dog that stays put, but it is not fully secure: guests with dogs have reported gaps at the bottom of the boundary and under the gate into the sheep field, enough that some have kept their dog in sight rather than loose. Anyone travelling with a determined explorer should plan on a long line or supervised garden time.
The other thing to know is that the owners' farm dogs roam the yard and visit guests, often daily. For sociable dogs this turns out to be a highlight of the stay, and plenty of families describe it that way. For a dog that does not get on with others it is a genuine problem, because at least one of them can get through the hedge into the guest garden, so a dog that needs its own space is not a good fit here. There is also only one toilet, which makes the cottage a stretch for a full house of six.
