Caddie, Saint Austell

Caddie is a single-storey holiday bungalow on the eastern edge of Saint Austell, close to Carlyon Bay and the south Cornwall coast path, and its selling point for dog owners is a properly secure back garden. Access is the thing to think hardest about. The driveway is steep and comes off a busy road on a sharp bend, and guests are asked to reverse in. A mirror has been installed and the hedge cut back, but it still takes confidence, and it is not somewhere to be unloading a dog casually at the roadside. The railway line also runs close by; some guests find it noisier than they expected and others say it barely registers, so light sleepers, canine or otherwise, should factor it in.

One further pet-specific point: an ant problem in the kitchen has been treated with powder spread outside, which owners of dogs that eat whatever they find will want to ask about before arrival. There is also no welcome pack, and cleaning materials and tea towels are not left for guests.

Overall this is a well-kept, genuinely dog-suited bungalow held back by an awkward entrance and a few gaps in what is provided. It suits confident drivers with a dog that wants a fenced garden and the coast path within reach.
