How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 2 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 33 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 7.4/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Canons Court Mews is a courtyard conversion in the fields outside Wotton-under-Edge, arranged as a set of self-contained units around a shared garden. It works well for groups, with en-suite bathrooms and properly equipped kitchens, and it is popular with walkers: the Cotswold escarpment is close and the town's shops and cafes are about twenty minutes away on foot.
Dogs are welcome, but the outside space is the thing to understand before booking. The garden is communal and unenclosed, shared with other guests, and dogs are asked to be kept on a lead in it. There is no secure run, so this is not a property where a dog can be turned out on its own - every toilet trip is a lead trip, and a dog that needs to burn off energy will be doing it on a walk rather than in the garden. Guests who arrived expecting a private enclosed space have said so plainly; those who knew what to expect found the lead rule perfectly reasonable.
Once you are out of the gate the walking is excellent, with the Cotswold Way within reach and a good spread of pubs and cafes in town, including a dog-friendly pub a short drive away that is worth booking ahead.
The accommodation itself divides opinion. Plenty of guests rate it as clean, comfortable and good value, and the host is described as responsive. Others have found tired furnishings, marked carpets and, on a busy changeover, not enough hot water for a group of walkers. It is priced as straightforward self-catering rather than a boutique stay, and expectations are best set accordingly.
Best suited to walkers and family groups with a lead-trained dog who want space, a kitchen and a Cotswold base rather than luxury. It earns a 4.2/5 paw rating.
