It is a whole-cottage rental rather than a hotel, which means an enclosed private garden, no shared spaces, and the kind of quiet, self-contained base that suits a dog and its owners.

There is little in the way of shops nearby, so it is wise to stock up in Keswick before arriving. The cottage welcomes one well-behaved dog and does not take large party bookings.

Castle Lodge best suits a couple or a small family who want an atmospheric, walk-from-the-door Lakeland base for themselves and one dog. Anyone after modern uniformity or travelling with several pets should look elsewhere, but for a cosy, genuinely dog-focused bolthole it is hard to fault.
