Cattersty Hideaway is a one-bedroom apartment on Windsor Road in the middle of Saltburn-by-the-Sea, and for a dog owner its appeal is simple: everything is on foot. The beach, the pier, the cliff lift, the railway station and the town's shops and pubs are all a few minutes away, so the car stays parked for most of a stay and the dog gets walked rather than driven.

Dogs are welcome, and guests travelling with one describe the flat as clean, modern and roomier than a one-bedroom listing suggests, with high ceilings and a separate workspace by the entrance. The listing does not publish a pet fee or a maximum number of dogs, so both are worth confirming directly.

The access is the caveat, and it is a real one. The apartment is on the top floor, reached by two long flights of stairs with no lift, and the key comes from a lockbox mounted high on the wall. Owners with an older or arthritic dog, or one that would need carrying, have found that hard work - it came up in a stay the guest otherwise rated highly, which is why it belongs near the top of the list rather than buried at the bottom. Traffic noise from the road and pale bedroom blinds that let a lot of light through have both been mentioned too, and either can matter for a dog that settles badly somewhere new.

Saltburn itself is a strong dog town. The beach below the cliffs is a long, flat stretch, the Cleveland Way runs along the cliff tops in both directions, and Cattersty Sands at Skinningrove - which the flat takes its name from - is a few minutes up the coast. Fresh milk and a well-stocked kitchen come as standard, and cleanliness is the single most consistent thing guests praise.

It suits a couple with a fit dog who want a smart, central base for the north-east coast. It is the wrong choice if stairs are a problem.
