Pet-friendly summary

Chesil Beach Lodge is a small group of self-contained, beach-themed apartments on the edge of Burton Bradstock, a short walk above Hive Beach on the Jurassic Coast, and it makes a naturally dog-friendly base on this stretch of Dorset. It holds a 4.6/5 paw rating, and dog owners come back for second stays.

The standout for dog owners is outdoor space. Some apartments, the Fossil apartment among them, open onto a private, fully enclosed garden where dogs can play off the lead, with sea views to enjoy while they do. Dog towels and treats are provided, there is a garden tap for rinsing sandy paws and a boot cleaner by the door, though after a wet spell it can be well used. Up to two dogs can stay for an extra charge on top of the accommodation rate, and dogs need to be at least a year old and fully house trained, so ask about the current fee, and about which apartment you will get, when you book.

That last point matters, because dogs are not accepted in every apartment, and not every dog-friendly one is on the ground floor. Guests in an upstairs unit found night-time toilet trips harder and worried about barking disturbing neighbours, and one apartment sits above the laundry room, so mornings can be noisy. If your dog needs quick access outside, ask for a ground-floor unit with its own garden.

The location is excellent for walking. Fields start at the door, Hive Beach and its café are about ten minutes down the path, and guests describe the nearby beach as dog-friendly. The village, with two pubs, is within easy walking distance. Rabbits are everywhere, which is lovely unless your dog has a strong prey drive, in which case expect a lot of time on high alert.

Some guests found the mattress in one apartment too soft. For couples with a dog who want sea views and beach walks, Chesil Beach Lodge is a very good choice, especially in a ground-floor apartment with a garden.
