Chi An Mor

Chi An Mor is a bungalow perched above Porth Beach on the northern edge of Newquay, let as a whole house, and it is one of the easier places in the area to arrive at with dogs. Nothing is shared, so there are no corridors or lobbies to negotiate, and the garden is fully enclosed, which means dogs can be let out off the lead the moment the car doors open.

The garden is what comes up most often. It is a decent size and secure enough that owners describe letting two or three dogs run about while they sit out with the view over Porth Island. There is a hose outside for rinsing sandy dogs down and a washer-dryer indoors for the towels afterwards, small things that make a wet week with dogs much less trying. Arrivals with a dog usually find a welcome pack for them as well, with treats and toys alongside the fresh bread, scones and clotted cream left for everyone else.

Porth Beach is about five minutes downhill, with a pub right by the sand, several more beaches a short drive away and Newquay itself walkable if you fancy the stroll. The catch is the return journey. The hill back up is steep and comes up in review after review, so factor it in if anyone in the party finds climbs hard going.

A few honest caveats. The hot tub is wood-fired, which means lighting a fire and waiting a couple of hours rather than lifting a lid, a pleasant ritual for some and a disappointment for anyone expecting to jump straight in. The garden is overlooked from the properties behind, so it is not a completely private sun trap. And while most guests find the house spotless, cleaning has occasionally slipped, with dog hair left under the sofa cushions and the vacuum not always in working order.

Chi An Mor suits families and couples who want a self-catering base with a safely enclosed garden, sea views and beach walks a few minutes from the door.
