How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 3 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 72 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.0/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: August 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
Cobble Cottage sits on Castle Wynd, a traffic-free lane directly beneath Richmond Castle in the middle of the North Yorkshire market town. For anyone bringing a dog the position is the point: you step out onto a quiet cobbled passage rather than a road, and the riverside walks along the Swale and the town's cobbled market square are both a couple of minutes away.
Dogs are welcome and the cottage attracts repeat visitors who bring one, couples with small dogs in particular. It is a compact two-storey property, cosy and well equipped, and it works best for one or two people plus a dog rather than a full household. Communication from the owner is a consistent strong point.
The walking on the doorstep is what makes it worth the money. Richmond sits at the mouth of Swaledale, with the falls and riverside paths in the town itself and the wider Yorkshire Dales a short drive away. Buses from the town centre make some day trips practical without moving the car at all.
Three things to weigh. Parking is the recurring frustration: the bays nearby are hourly only and the long-stay car park is about a ten-minute walk, which is a haul with a dog and bags. The upstairs windows are single glazed with a draught in at least one of them, and there have been reports of the heating being off on arrival and taking hours to bring the cottage up to temperature - relevant if you are arriving late with a wet dog in November. The occasional guest has also found stray hair left from a previous stay; not universal, but worth knowing if anyone in the party is sensitive.
Best suited to a couple with a small or medium dog who want a genuinely central base for Richmond and Swaledale, and who can live with hourly parking and a cottage that takes a while to warm up. It earns a 4.3/5 paw rating.
