How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 7 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 57 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.4/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: September 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

- Owners are asked to clean up after their dog.
- The garden is shared with guests in the other cottage rather than private to this one.
- On-site pet amenities: dog towels and a water bowl.
Pet-friendly summary
Cosy Stable at Oak Farm is a converted stable on a working smallholding at Gwehelog, a couple of miles north of Usk in the Monmouthshire countryside. It is a one-room conversion done with some care - horse-themed fittings, antique furniture, a very comfortable bed - and the setting is the real draw, with the Usk Valley spread out below and sheep and chickens for neighbours.
Dogs are made welcome here in a way guests keep coming back to, and the farm setting is much of the reason: there are fields for off-lead walking within a short stroll, and the owners' dog, the chickens and the sheep are all part of the scene. That cuts both ways. A confident, stock-steady dog will have a fine time of it. A dog that chases poultry or bristles at other dogs will need managing from the moment you park.
The practical limitation is worth being clear about, because it is the thing guests with dogs actually raise: there is no private enclosed garden. Dogs need to be on a lead around the yard and the farm, which makes this a place for a few nights rather than a fortnight if your dog is used to being let out of a back door. Off-road parking helps, and the off-lead fields are close enough that most people find it a minor adjustment rather than a real problem.
The hosts are the other thing nearly everyone mentions. Home-baked bread, jam, garden flowers and whatever the farm is producing tend to be waiting on arrival, and they are quick with local suggestions when they are around. Usk itself is a few minutes away, with castles and the Wye Valley within easy driving distance.
Best for one or two dogs that are steady around livestock, on a short countryside break where you are happy to lead-walk from the door.
