How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 1 pet-mention guest review sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 7 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.2/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: September 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet-friendly summary
Crabtree Cottage is a self-catering cottage on a working farm at Hackness, in the North York Moors a few miles inland from Scarborough, and the setup is about as simple as dog-friendly accommodation gets. It is a whole property to yourselves - no shared corridors, no other guests to negotiate around - with a private walled courtyard garden, so a dog can be let out without a lead and a walk in the dark first.
The cottage takes one well-behaved dog. There is a house rule keeping pets off the furniture, so a blanket or throw brought from home is worth packing; guests have tended to meet the notice on arrival rather than see it beforehand.
The farm setting is both the appeal and the thing to think about. Sheep, horses and assorted farm animals pass the windows and the track, which most dogs find fascinating and a few find a lot to take in on the first day. The farm's own dog does the rounds in the mornings, so a dog that would rather not meet other dogs will need managing rather than left to roam.
Inside, it is well equipped for a longer stay, with a washing machine, dishwasher, a proper set of kitchen kit and wifi that holds up despite the location. Tea, coffee, milk and biscuits are left out for arrivals, and the hot tub is a genuine draw that recent guests confirm is ready to use on the day.
Fewer dog owners have written about this one than about a busy hotel, so there is less detail to go on than the format itself promises. Two practical caveats have been raised again by more recent guests rather than fixed: the access track is unmade and rough enough that a low car needs taking down it slowly, and damp or mildew smells in the washing machine and dishwasher, along with mould in the shower sealant, have come up across separate stays weeks apart, which makes it a live complaint rather than a one-off. Checkout is 10am, early if you were hoping for a slow morning.
Best suited to dog owners after a quiet, self-contained base between Scarborough and Whitby with the moors on the doorstep, and who will take a rough track and a working farm as part of the appeal rather than a drawback.
