Pet-friendly summary
Cringley Cottage is a stone cottage on Silver Street in the middle of Askrigg, and it is about as easy a Wensleydale base for a dog as you will find. A footpath starts roughly ten metres from the door, open country is minutes beyond that, and a coffee shop and the King's Arms are a two-minute walk, with more pubs and a village shop alongside. Guests bring two dogs without any suggestion it is a stretch, and a good number come back year after year.
Inside it is warm and genuinely cosy - a log burner, heating that copes with a Dales winter, plenty of blankets - which counts for a lot when a dog comes back wet. The small touches keep coming up in what guests say: torches left out for the last trip outside, because it gets properly dark here, and a welcome pack on arrival.
The one real limitation for dog owners is the garden. It is reached from the lane rather than from inside the cottage, so you cannot open a door and let the dog out while you keep an eye from the kitchen, and the gate is tied shut with string rather than latched.
