Pet-friendly summary
Cut Moch is a barn conversion on a working farm at Plas Moelfre Hall, in the hills above Llansilin on the Powys side of the Welsh border. It is one of three barns on the site, each let separately, and it is about as straightforward a dog holiday as you can book: a secure enclosed garden, a hot tub, and hill walking that starts at the door. It earns a 4.9 out of 5 paw rating from guests who brought dogs.
The garden is what dog owners come back to. It is fully enclosed, and guests travelling with known escape artists, terriers and schnauzers among them, say the fencing held and they could stop watching. Beyond it, the farm's fields and the hill behind the barns are walkable straight from the door, and guests are allowed to take dogs into the adjacent fields. There are sheep on the surrounding land, so a lead is the sensible default on open ground.
Arrival is well handled. There is a welcome pack of eggs from the farm, milk and Welsh cakes, and dogs get their own: treats and a blanket, so they can settle on the sofa without anyone minding. The barn has underfloor heating, a log burner and a gas barbecue outside, and the hot tub in the garden is the feature most guests pick out after a day on the hills. The owners live close by, hand over what you need on arrival and then leave you alone.
The setting is remote. It is roughly 20 minutes to the nearest town for a supermarket and the lanes in are narrow. In exchange you get Pistyll Rhaeadr, one of the tallest waterfalls in Britain, a short drive away, plus Chirk Castle, Erddig and Llangollen within reach, and dog-friendly pubs in the nearby villages. Barmouth and the coast make a longer day out.
Two caveats. With three barns plus the farmhouse on one site, it is less secluded than the photographs suggest, and you will be aware of the other parties. And there is no mop and bucket provided, which guests with muddy dogs have missed after a wet walk, so pack accordingly.
Best suited to couples, families or small groups with up to two dogs who want a secure garden, walks from the door and a hot tub at the end of them, and who do not mind a 20-minute drive for shopping. Less suited to anyone expecting a single property alone on a hillside.
