Derwent Manor Apartments & Rooms

Derwent Manor sits in Portinscale, a mile outside Keswick, and its position is what makes it work for dog owners: the river is about 150 metres away, Derwentwater about 300, and a bridleway runs into Keswick town centre in roughly twenty minutes on foot. The first and last walk of the day are both on the doorstep, and the northern fells start more or less where the lane ends.

The apartments have been refurbished recently and read as modern and comfortable, with several guests describing them as larger than expected. Some units open straight onto the outside, which is the detail that matters most when a wet dog needs to come in without crossing a carpeted hallway. Dog owners return here, several describing it as their standing base for walking holidays in the Lakes, and staff have been quick to fix things and flexible on early check-in.

The one consistent caveat is the outdoor space. The garden is shared between the apartments and it is not enclosed, so a dog that will not recall reliably needs to be on a lead outside, and owners of small dogs have found themselves sharing the space with larger dogs at the same time. Anyone hoping for a private, secure garden should plan around that rather than assume it.

Beyond that the reports are minor and practical: heating controls that would not turn down on one stay, and a kitchen stocked with the basics rather than condiments and kitchen roll.

Best suited to walkers with dogs who want a self-catering base within striking distance of Derwentwater and the Keswick fells, and who are happy keeping the dog on a lead around the grounds. It earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
