Derwent Valley View is a small cottage on the edge of Crich in Derbyshire, looking out over the Derwent valley towards the Peak District, and it is set up for dogs more thoughtfully than most self-catering places of its size. Guests arriving with a dog find a crate, a dog bed, bowls and blankets already waiting, which means the usual car-load of kit can stay at home.
That provision is what dog owners mention first, and it is backed up by a house that is easy to bring an animal into: comfortable but hard-wearing furnishings, a well-equipped kitchen, good bedding and off-street parking right by the door. There is milk and cereal in for the first morning and a guest book full of local suggestions. The owners come across as attentive without being intrusive.
The one significant caveat is outside. The garden is open and ungated, running straight into the surrounding land, so a dog cannot simply be let out - owners describe going out with theirs every time, and some have said the lack of enclosure was enough that they would not book again. If your dog is reliable off-lead or happy on a long line it is a non-issue; if it is a bolter, this is the wrong house. There is also no light down the side of the property, and the step there has caused at least one fall after dark, so a torch is worth packing.
