Pet-friendly summary
Driftwood Lodge is about as good as a dog holiday gets in the South Hams. It is one of a small group of lodges on a quiet, well-kept site above Soar Mill Cove, a few miles west of Salcombe, with parking right beside the lodge, a dog exercise area on site and the South West Coast Path within a few minutes' walk. Guests travelling with dogs are near-unanimous about it.
The dog welcome is unusually thorough. Arriving guests find dog treats, bowls, a box of toys and - the detail that gets mentioned most - proper wet-weather towels for drying a dog off after the beach, alongside a welcome hamper for the humans. The owner responds quickly and is clearly used to dog-owning guests. None of this is expensive to provide, but very few self-catering lets actually bother, and it lands well after a wet walk on Bolt Head.
The location is the other half of it. Soar Mill Cove is a short walk down the valley, and the coast path runs from there to Bolt Head, Sharp Tor and on towards Salcombe, with Hope Cove the other way. There are beaches at South Sands and North Sands within a short drive, and the whole stretch of coast is walking country rather than resort country. Inside, the lodge is warm, well equipped and generous with the extras: a dishwasher, washing machine, barbecue, sun loungers, wind break and garden games all live on site.
The one real caveat is remoteness, and whether it counts against the place depends on what you want. There is no village pub within walking distance; the Soar Mill Cove hotel is about ten minutes on foot and serves food and drink to non-residents, and anything else means driving. For dog owners that is mostly a feature - the site is quiet, the neighbouring lodges are calm, and nothing here needs your dog to be on best behaviour in a crowded bar. Driftwood Lodge earns 4.8/5 for paws and suits almost any dog, particularly one that likes long coastal days and a warm floor afterwards.
