Dumbuie, Haltwhistle

Dumbuie is a big three-storey house in the middle of Haltwhistle, and its appeal for dog owners is mostly about scale and layout. Groups of eight or nine take the whole place, so there are no shared corridors and no other guests to work around, and the practical touches are aimed squarely at walkers: a boot room with a dog bed in it, a large kitchen where everyone ends up, and an enclosed back yard with outdoor seating that guests describe as genuinely safe for dogs. Two dogs are allowed per booking, so it works for a party bringing more than one.

Haltwhistle itself does a lot of the work. Owners travelling with dogs note that the town is easy-going about them, with pubs and takeaways that will take a dog and everything within a walk of the front door. Hadrian's Wall is a short drive away and the walking around it is some of the best in the north of England, with the coast and Newcastle reachable by car, bus or train for a change of scene.

The house is honest rather than smart, and it is worth knowing where it falls short. The top floor is the best of it. The middle floor is tired, particularly the bathrooms, and cleanliness has not been consistent: mould in a bathroom, damp cushions left in the kitchen and crockery put away dirty have all been reported. Other parties found it clean and comfortable, so the picture is mixed rather than uniformly poor, but a group that wants a polished let should look elsewhere.

Two other practical notes. Parking is on-street, and the designated spaces have caused friction with neighbours, which is awkward when you are unloading dog beds and bikes. And the stairs run straight up out of the sitting room, so noise carries to the bedrooms above.

Best suited to a large family or group with a couple of settled dogs who want space, a safe yard and Hadrian's Wall walking, and who will take room to spread out over polish.
