Eco-Friendly Cabins, Lidgate

These are a handful of small eco cabins in Lidgate, a quiet Suffolk village south-east of Newmarket, set beside the village's 16th century pub. The appeal for a dog owner is straightforward: walks start at the door, each cabin has its own outside space, and there is a park and a dog walk within easy reach in the village itself. It is a simple, low-cost base rather than a comfortable one, and it pays to go in knowing that.

Dogs cost 20 pounds per stay, which is stated up front rather than sprung on you later. The outside space and the walking are what guests travelling with dogs rate here; the accommodation itself gets a cooler reception. The village is genuinely peaceful and Newmarket is close enough for a day out.

The caveats are real and mostly about upkeep. Cleanliness has been an intermittent problem, with unwashed cutlery and mugs, dog hair left on the carpet by the door from an earlier stay, and food left behind in a cupboard well past its best. The decking and the ground immediately around the cabins have been described as untidy. Beds are firm. The bathroom extractor runs at night and carries between units, so you hear the neighbours as well as yourself, and the water pump is loud enough after a shower or a flush to wake someone in the next room.

Two things have been advertised and then not delivered: WiFi and a television have both been found missing on arrival, and the pub next door, which is a large part of the reason to book here, has been closed during at least one stay. Check both before you travel. Best suited to dog owners who want cheap, quiet, walk-from-the-door countryside and are not fussy about the fittings. Anyone expecting a polished holiday let, or relying on being able to work or stream, should look elsewhere. It earns a 4.2/5 paw rating.
