The staff are the thread running through the positive feedback. Guests travelling with dogs mention rooms that worked for them and their dog, an accessible layout with good views, and help offered before it was asked for. Small extras such as free wetsuit hire during a stay add to the surf-trip appeal, and the position does the rest: Fistral, the coast path and the headland walks are all close enough to reach on foot with a dog.

Dogs are charged at £15 per dog per night, and the lodge asks you to book the dog in by telephone before you arrive rather than adding it to an online booking. A dog welcome pack is provided when you get there.

The caveat is real and worth taking seriously. Alongside the good stays there are accounts of a room in poor condition on arrival: a cracked sink with sharp edges, black mould around the shower tray, a split bathroom window, dirty curtains, a broken socket with cables left loose, and a mattress that had gone soft to the boards. That account also came from a couple travelling with a dog, who were given a room other than the one they had booked and reached it by an external staircase, which was difficult for a guest with mobility problems. Room standards here read as inconsistent rather than uniformly poor.

The sensible approach is to confirm exactly which room you are getting when you phone the dog booking through, ask about stair access if that matters, and raise anything wrong with staff on arrival, since their helpfulness is the one thing every account agrees on. Elemental Surf Lodge suits easygoing owners on a surf or beach trip who want a cheap, friendly base near Fistral and are not expecting hotel polish.
