Pet-friendly summary
Fell Cottage is a richly furnished, exceptionally well-stocked cottage on the quiet northern fringe of the Lake District, and it earns a 4.8/5 paw rating from guests who travel with dogs. Up to two pets can stay, and dog owners describe it as one of the most genuinely dog-friendly cottages they have booked.
The big draw is the space. A small courtyard by the door is handy for letting dogs out, and guests have the run of a large, fully enclosed grassy field and paddock where spaniels and other energetic breeds can run off lead. Owners Janet and Jon live next door, are on hand without hovering, and leave a welcome pack that includes treats for the dog.
The hosts keep three friendly dogs, several cats and chickens of their own. They are kept out of the cottage garden, but if your dog is anxious or has a strong chase instinct it is worth mentioning when you book.
The setting is rural, with dark skies and fell views, and Wigton is about four miles away for shopping. Keswick is roughly half an hour's drive, putting the northern lakes and fells within easy reach, and the Solway coast is close by for beach walks.
Ceilings and doorways are low in parts of the house, so tall guests should mind their heads, and WiFi and phone signal can be unreliable. For anyone wanting a peaceful, generously equipped base with secure space for dogs, Fell Cottage is an outstanding choice.
