Fletland Mill and Holiday Hamlet

Fletland Mill and Holiday Hamlet is a cluster of converted buildings around an eighteenth-century watermill in the Lincolnshire countryside near Baston, a few miles from Stamford, set in thirty acres of private woodland, riverbank and fields. For dogs, the acreage is the story: the walking starts at the door and stays on the property, so there is no lead-on shuffle down a lane before the day begins.

Guests travelling with dogs describe walking off the lead through the woods and along the river straight from the doorstep, which works when recall is reliable. Deer live in the grounds and ponies graze some of the fields, so it is not a free-for-all, and the owners are happy to point out which routes suit which dogs. The hamlet is well off the road, so there is no traffic noise and nothing to bolt towards.

The buildings themselves range from small one-bedroom conversions to the mill itself, and the whole hamlet can be taken together for a large group, which makes it a common choice for family gatherings where several dogs turn up at once. The practical side lands well: clean, warm properties, well equipped kitchens, a games room in the mill, a tennis court, a barbecue and owners who come out to meet arrivals rather than leaving a key in a box.

Two things to weigh. There is no fenced or enclosed garden anywhere in the hamlet, which is the one thing guests with pets say they would add, so a dog that cannot be trusted loose will need a lead or a long line even for a garden potter. Some of the smaller conversions have floor-to-ceiling glass facing the courtyard and few opening windows, which can feel exposed when the hamlet is full, and the larger buildings get the better views over the fields and river.
