Flora's Barn is a converted barn in Crowcombe, a small village on the edge of the Quantock Hills in west Somerset, and it is a lovely, easy base for a holiday with a dog. The back garden is fully enclosed, and dog owners come back to that point more than any other: dogs can be let out to explore safely while everyone relaxes, and it suits two-dog households as well as one.
Up to two pets can come per booking. Owners Bruce and Jacqui meet guests on arrival and are quick to help with questions, and the barn itself is kept to a very high standard of cleanliness. Guests notice the small things here: plenty of towels, laundry and kitchen supplies already in place, and a welcome pack of milk, local biscuits and cider. There is a games room, and the living room has a large window looking out over fields and hills.
The walking is excellent. Footpaths start from the door, open hill country is a couple of minutes' drive away, and the coast, beaches and Dunster Castle are all close enough for a day out. Back in the village there is a dog-friendly pub serving good food within easy walking distance, and a well-stocked shop run by volunteers. Taunton is around 15 minutes by car.
The main caveat is a recent comment that a mattress was showing its age and may be due for replacement. The village is quiet and the barn is popular with returning guests, so dates can be hard to come by.
