How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
- Evidence: 12 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
- Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
- Wider context: The property has 72 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.0/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
- Last refreshed: October 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
- How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.
Pet-friendly summary
The Garden Flat sits at the back of Walnut Tree House, a listed building on The Street in Rustington, a village on the West Sussex coast just east of Littlehampton. It is a small, quiet bolthole that welcomes dogs, and it is best suited to a couple or solo traveller with one dog on a short break.
The location is the strongest point. Shops, cafés, pubs and bus stops are a short walk away, and the beach is close enough for daily walks. Because the flat is tucked behind the main house it is quiet, with no road noise, which suits nervous dogs. Guests describe it as clean and well equipped, with a comfortable bed and parking on site.
The garden is where expectations need managing. There is access to a pretty shared garden, and smaller dogs enjoy sniffing around it, but it is not enclosed: guests are asked to leave the gate to the road open, so it is not safe to let a dog out unsupervised. Dogs are also not allowed on the furniture, and with no throws provided some owners found that hard to manage, so bring a blanket or dog bed.
Space is the other caveat. The flat is compact, and owners of larger breeds found a week with two adults and a Labrador a squeeze, while others felt it was ideal for a few nights. Parking is tight with no turning space for bigger cars, the path is unlit at night, and the sofa and mattress have drawn some complaints.
For a short seaside stay with a small or medium dog who is happy on a lead in the garden, the Garden Flat is a handy, well-placed base, and it earns a 4.2/5 paw rating.
