How this review was built Evidence, sources, refresh cadence
  • Evidence: 6 pet-mention guest reviews sourced from major booking platforms - guests who explicitly mentioned travelling with a dog. Each review is screened for pet-relevance, then judged for sentiment to compute the paw rating.
  • Not a personal visit. We don't stay at every hotel we cover - we summarise patterns from real guest reviews, paraphrased and never quoted verbatim. Full standard on our editorial policy page.
  • Wider context: The property has 51 guest reviews overall across booking platforms, averaging 9.9/10 - the paw rating reflects only the pet-mentioning subset.
  • Last refreshed: September 2026. Policies and pricing drift; we re-check on a rolling basis. Confirm specifics with the property at the moment you book.
  • How the paw rating works: Full detail on the methodology page, including the three verification gates and known limitations.

Pet policy at a glance

  • Pet fee: £25 per stay.
  • On-site pet amenities: dog bed, dog towel, dog treats, poo bags, holiday dog ID tag.
  • One well behaved dog is welcome, and the dog has to be booked in and paid for.
  • More than one dog may be allowed depending on size and breed, by arrangement before you arrive.
  • Dogs are not allowed in the bedrooms, or on the sofas and soft furnishings.
  • Dogs must not be left alone with free run of the cottage.
  • Flea and tick treatments must be up to date for every dog.
  • The cottage is in a rural location, so keep dogs under close control outside for their own safety and for the sake of other owners and livestock.

  • A further cleaning charge of £50 applies if dog hair is left behind, if dogs have been in the bedrooms, or if an uncovered sofa needs cleaning.

Pet-friendly summary

George's Cottage is a stone cottage on Ashopton Road in Bamford, in the Hope Valley, with Bamford Edge rising behind it and the Ladybower and Derwent reservoirs a short drive up the road. It is a whole-house let rather than a room in somebody else's home, which for most dog owners is where the decision starts.

Dogs are clearly expected here rather than merely permitted. Owners travelling with them have found a dog bed, blankets and treats waiting alongside a welcome pack of homemade cake, wine, eggs and milk, and several describe their dog settling in straight away. The practical kit matters as much as the welcome: there is an Aga that keeps the place warm, drying space for wet coats and a washing machine, which after a Peak District winter walk is worth more than any amount of decor.

The one thing to plan for is the garden. It is terraced and fenced, and once you are through the gate it is properly enclosed - but you reach it by crossing a shared pathway, so a dog cannot simply be let out of the back door and forgotten about. Two separate dog owners have raised this and both said the same thing: it works fine, it just is not the open-the-door-and-shut-it arrangement people assume from the photographs. Carry the lead as far as the gate.

Walking is the reason to come. Routes start from the house rather than from a car park, so the car can stay where it is for a whole weekend, and the Yorkshire Bridge Inn is a few minutes down the road for a pint at the end of one. There is a bus stop outside if you want to range further into the Peak.

The other caveat is the stairs. They are steep up to the first-floor bedroom and steeper again to the attic room, with narrow treads, and that is worth thinking about for an older or heavier dog used to following you up to bed.

It suits owners who walk hard and want somewhere to dry off afterwards, and who are content to walk a dog to a garden gate rather than open a back door.
