Gill Barn is a converted barn in the Lowther valley near Bampton, about seven miles south of Penrith and a few minutes from the road that runs up to Haweswater. It is a whole-house let sleeping a small group, which is the format that tends to work best with a dog: no shared corridors, no other guests to negotiate, and a door that opens onto your own garden.

That garden is what the confirmed pet feedback picks out, and it matters more here than it would at a hotel. A dog can be let out last thing without a lead, and the lanes beyond the gate give proper walks without driving to a trailhead first.

The property gets consistently good marks for equipment and layout - a log burner in the lounge, a large kitchen, plenty of hot water, and clear arrival instructions. The recurring complaint across the wider review pool is housekeeping: dust under beds and a general need for a deeper clean come up in more than one stay. Worth knowing if you notice that sort of thing, or if you would rather start from spotless floors before a dog adds to them.

Two practical points. Dogs are taken by request rather than automatically, so confirm your dates and the number of dogs with the owner before you book, and ask about a charge at the same time because none is published. Arrival and departure times as listed have caused confusion in the past, so get those in writing too.

Best suited to a couple or a small group with one or two dogs who want a quiet rural base on the eastern edge of the Lakes, with an enclosed garden, a proper kitchen and walking from the gate. Less suited to anyone who wants a shop or a pub within walking distance.
