Pet-friendly summary
Goosepond is a one-bedroom barn conversion tucked into a hamlet in the Shropshire Hills, and it reads as a place built with dogs in mind rather than one that merely tolerates them. The whole cottage sits on a single level with tiled floors throughout and underfloor heating beneath them, which is a practical combination after a wet walk and a comfortable one for an older dog. Up to two pets can stay.
The enclosed courtyard is the feature dog owners mention most. It is walled and secure enough to open the door and let dogs out without standing over them, and it catches the sun for a morning coffee. Owners Ellie and Joe live next door, leave a welcome pack of cake, eggs, milk and bread, then call round once to check you have what you need and otherwise leave you to it.
Walking starts at the door. Footpaths run from the hamlet up the lanes and down into the village, and the Long Mynd, Carding Mill Valley, Wenlock Edge and Ragleth Hill are all a short drive away, as is Church Stretton about five miles off for coffee stops. Guests travelling with dogs regularly mention the dog-friendly pubs in the area, including the Plough at Wistanstow and the Green Dragon at Little Stretton.
Two things to weigh. The approach is along narrow lanes with few passing places, which is unnerving in the dark or if you are not a confident driver. And although the courtyard is enclosed, it sits only a few feet from a country lane that delivery drivers and locals use as a shortcut at speed - some dog owners have found the traffic unsettled their dogs enough to spoil sitting outside. There are no soft outdoor chairs either, so hot afternoons in the courtyard are less inviting than they could be.
Best suited to a couple with one or two dogs who want walks from the door and a warm, spotless base for exploring south Shropshire. It earns a 4.8/5 paw rating.
