Groes Heol is a large stone house in the hills above Llanbrynmair, in a quiet corner of Powys where the nearest neighbours are sheep and forestry. It sleeps a big group - ten adults is routine - and the thing that makes it work for dogs is the garden, which is walled and gated. Guests travelling with dogs mention it more than any other feature: with the main gate shut, a dog can be let out without anyone standing over it.
Up to two pets are welcome per booking. Beyond that the property makes no formal pet arrangements, so bowls, beds and towels are worth packing.
The walking starts at the door. A forest track climbs from the house to a lake at the top, which is the obvious morning circuit, and there is enough open ground around the property that a short day needs no driving at all. Further afield, Barmouth has dog-friendly stretches of its long sandy beach, Coed y Brenin has waymarked trails and waterfalls, and Cadair Idris is close enough for a serious day out. Two wood burners, one at each end of the house, make it a comfortable place to dry a wet dog off afterwards.
The house is well equipped for the size of group it takes - a big cooker, a proper utility room and a fridge freezer that will hold a delivered shop - and the owner is quick to answer questions before and during a stay, with good suggestions for what to do locally. Maintenance is the one soft spot: a wood burner out of action and an oven needing a better clean have both come up, and cleaning standards on changeover have not always matched the rest of the house.
Best suited to two families or a multi-generation group travelling with a dog or two who want space, hills and a garden they do not have to supervise.
