Heron's View, Ruthin

Heron's View is a self-catering cottage at Llanrhydd Mill, in the countryside just outside Ruthin in the Vale of Clwyd, and it is set up for the kind of trip where the dog comes first and the itinerary follows. There is a paddock to let a dog stretch out in after a day on the hills, huts to sit out in, and a log fire for when the weather turns. The owners are close by without being in the way.

The house rules are clear and worth reading before you book. Up to three dogs are allowed per booking, dogs only rather than pets in general, and they must be kept on a lead at all times on the property. The owners also ask to be told in advance that a dog is coming. In practice guests find the welcome warmer than that reads, with the heating already on before arrival and Welsh cakes and fresh milk waiting.

One caveat matters more than the others for dog owners. The immediate outside space attached to the cottage is small, and it should not be relied on as secure: the gate does not latch reliably in a breeze and the fencing is low enough for most dogs to clear. Guests whose dogs will happily stay put report no problems and make good use of the paddock and the fields around it, but anyone travelling with a bolter should plan on a lead outside the door. The lead rule exists for a reason.

Ruthin is about a twenty-minute walk away, and the cottage makes a sensible base for Moel Famau, the Clwydian Range and the wider north Wales coast. Two gripes unrelated to dogs come up often enough to flag: the mattress has been described as badly worn, and both the WiFi and the TV reception are patchy, so do not plan on working from here. For a quiet, genuinely dog-centred base in north-east Wales, Heron's View earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
