Pet-friendly summary
Holly Tree Cottage sits on the edge of Coniston village with the Old Man of Coniston rising behind it, and it is the sort of Lake District cottage dog owners book once and then keep coming back to. It holds a 4.4/5 paw rating and takes up to two pets.
The enclosed rear garden is what dog owners talk about first. It is secure enough to let dogs out without a lead, catches the sun, and has big views up to the fells, with a garden table for sitting out in the evening. Parking for two cars is at the back, with a rear entrance and a stable door, so muddy dogs and boots come in without trailing through the house. There is a lockable bike store and an outside hosepipe for rinsing off paws and kit after a wet walk.
Inside, two large bedrooms each have a king-size bed and their own en-suite, there is a wood burner in the lounge, and a welcome hamper is waiting on arrival. The owners are quick to help with anything you have forgotten.
Coniston itself is very dog friendly. The village centre is a few minutes on foot, with several pubs that welcome dogs and serve good food, and the lake is around 15 minutes' walk. Walks to the waterfalls and the old copper mines start close by, and Ambleside, Hawkshead and Tarn Hows are a short drive.
A couple of things to know. This is sheep country, and there is no dedicated off-lead area in the village, so most walks are on the lead. Some guests found the duvets on the small side for the big beds, and the lounge seating is a squeeze for four adults.
For two couples or a small family travelling with a dog or two, Holly Tree Cottage is a comfortable, well-placed Coniston base.
