Pet-friendly summary
Honeysuckle Cottage is one of a small group of holiday cottages at Fairview Farm in West Down, a village between Ilfracombe and Braunton in North Devon, and the welcome for dogs is more thought-through than most. Arriving guests have found a dog hamper waiting with a bowl, toys and treats in it, which sets the tone before you have finished unpacking.
The cottage itself is compact but properly equipped, and being a whole-property let there are no shared corridors or neighbours through the wall to worry about. There is a picnic area behind the cottages and a games room on the site, and the position is a good one for a Devon week with a dog: Ilfracombe, Woolacombe and Barnstaple are all within easy reach, the beaches are close, and the village pub a short walk away is well thought of.
Where owners have been let down is the outside space, and it comes up more than once. There is no enclosed garden at the cottage, so a dog cannot simply be let out. The dog exercise area on the site has been found overgrown with only a mown path through it, which makes it close to useless for actually running a dog off the lead, and there is nowhere else within walking distance to do so - the nearest practical option has been a recreation ground in Braunton, about five miles away. Dogs are also not allowed in the games room, which removes the obvious wet-weather option on a bad Devon afternoon.
None of that stops it being a good cottage, and the guest scores are excellent, but it does shape who it suits. It works best for owners of dogs who are happy with lead walks and beach trips and do not need off-lead exercise on the doorstep, and for anyone willing to drive a few miles for a proper run. On that basis it earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.
