Hope Hall Barn

Hope Hall Barn sits high on a hillside above Worthen with the Stiperstones on the horizon, and it is the kind of place people rebook year after year with their dogs. The garden is the headline: large, fully enclosed, part lawn and part slope, with trees and wildflowers to keep a curious dog busy and views over the Shropshire hills from every seat. The owner lives in the house opposite, meets guests on arrival and points out the local walks, usually leaving a home-baked cake and fresh eggs; guests consistently describe the balance as helpful but never intrusive.

Worth knowing before you book. The approach is a long, steep, rutted gravel track that guests warn is not suited to low-slung cars, particularly in wet weather. The garden fence drops to around three feet in one section, which is fine for most dogs but not for a determined jumper, and some dogs find the stone pathways awkward underfoot. Guests have also noted that the property asks dogs to stay downstairs and off the furniture, so it suits a dog that settles happily on its own bed. The owner keeps a dog of her own; a party travelling with reactive dogs reported that it came to the gate, read the situation and wandered off calmly, which is reassuring but worth planning for.

The nearest shop is a couple of miles away and Pontesbury has a supermarket about fifteen minutes out, so it pays to arrive stocked up. In return you get a genuinely quiet hilltop, a dog-friendly pub with a secure beer garden ten minutes down the lane, and the Long Mynd and Stiperstones on the doorstep.
