Jean's Place, East Heslerton

Jean's Place is a lodge on a small park at East Heslerton, out on the edge of the Vale of Pickering between Malton and Scarborough, and the welcome is what dog owners notice first. Arrivals are met with a bottle of fizz, and dogs get their own bag of treats - a small thing, but it tells you the owner has thought about who is actually turning up. The lodge sleeps a family comfortably and has taken parties arriving with two small dogs without fuss.

Inside it is spotless and better appointed than the format suggests: a good shower, a proper kitchen, comfortable beds, fluffy towels and slippers laid out, and the practical stock - bin liners, cloths, washing-up liquid - that saves a supermarket run on the first evening. There is a hot tub, which is a genuine draw after a cold day out, and parking right at the door. Guest scores are outstanding at 9.7 out of 10, though from a small number of stays so far.

The position is a mixed thing with a dog. On the good side, Yorkshire Wolds footpaths are close by, the southern edge of the North York Moors is a short drive north, and Scarborough is about half an hour east, with beaches that open up to dogs outside the summer restrictions. On the other, the park sits just off a busy stretch of the A64, and that is the one point guests raise. Keep a dog on the lead between the car and the door, and be deliberate about where you let it off.

The lodge takes up to two dogs per booking; no fee or weight limit is published, so agree those with the owner when you book. On the evidence of the stays reviewed so far, the 4.6/5 paw rating is fair: a clean, well-run lodge where a dog is expected rather than merely tolerated.
