King Street Accommodation, Margate

King Street Accommodation is a small owner-run guesthouse in a period townhouse in the middle of Margate's Old Town, a few minutes from the sands, and it is one of those places where bringing a dog is clearly normal rather than negotiated. Guests come back with the same dog, and several booked it in the first place precisely because it takes them.

The rooms are the draw as much as the welcome: an old house furnished with antiques and artwork, warm in winter, clean, and quirkier than the price suggests. The owners are the other half of it - flexible about early arrivals and late departures, happy to mind luggage, and generous with recommendations. Dogs are greeted rather than tolerated, and the surrounding streets are well supplied with cafes and restaurants that will seat you with one.

Two things follow from this being a small shared house rather than a hotel. There are resident dogs living on the premises, which is a plus if yours is sociable and a problem if it is not, so it is worth a conversation before booking if your dog is reactive to other animals. And because the building is genuinely dog-friendly and shared, the entrance area can carry a dog smell, which guests who do not have one have noticed - offered as a passing observation rather than a complaint, but the sort of thing worth knowing in advance. Bathroom arrangements also vary by room, with some shared and some with their own basin and toilet, so check which you are getting.

The location does the rest of the work. The beach, the Turner Contemporary, the Old Town's independent shops and the harbour arm are all walkable, and Margate is an easy place to spend a day with a dog on a lead.

Best suited to a couple or solo traveller with a sociable dog who want the Old Town on the doorstep and hosts who treat a dog as an ordinary guest.
