Pet-friendly summary

Lincoln Reds Lookout is a converted barn studio set in the grounds of the South Ormsby Hall estate, deep in the Lincolnshire Wolds, and it offers something most self-catering places cannot: a very large amount of open ground immediately outside the door. Dogs get the run of it, and guests travelling with them describe that space as the main reason the stay worked.

The conversion is careful and the fittings are good, with a comfortable fold-out double, a well-stocked kitchenette, reliable WiFi and a welcome pack of estate-made produce. The pub is within walking distance and does a decent Sunday roast, though it is cash only, which is worth knowing before you set off. Beyond that it is quiet, dark at night and full of wildlife: barn owls, hares, birds of prey and, less conveniently, ground-nesting birds.

That wildlife shapes the estate's rules. Dogs must be kept on a lead at all times, and the reason is visible from the doorstep: ground-nesting birds and hares across open ground, with cattle in the field at some points in the year. There is no enclosed garden, so the lead rule is the whole of it, and guests have said the place would be transformed by a small fence around the studio. Large prickly weeds through the grounds are the other underfoot hazard, worth checking paws for after a walk.

The estate takes up to two dogs and asks that they be small ones, which is the detail most likely to rule the property in or out for you. The remaining caveats are minor: the kitchen is a kitchenette with no oven, insects find their way in during warm weather, and building work in the grounds has spoiled the outlook for some guests. With a 4.5/5 paw rating, this suits a couple or a solo traveller with one or two small, well-controlled dogs who want genuine quiet, big skies and Wolds walking from the door.
