Martin Cottage is one of a small cluster of holiday cottages on a working farm above Hele Bay, on the eastern edge of Ilfracombe, and the setting is what makes it work for dogs. There is a fenced exercise field on site for a first-thing run off the lead, a private cove a short walk downhill, and the South West Coast Path passes in both directions.
The farm side of it is a genuine draw. Alpacas, chickens and other animals have the run of the land and can be fed from the shared utility room, and the owners leave dog treats, poo bags and a towel for muddy paws alongside fresh eggs for the humans. Staff pass by regularly and make a fuss of dogs without being intrusive. Up to three pets are allowed per booking, which is more generous than most cottages of this size.
Size is the honest caveat. The cottage is snug - ideal for two people and one dog, tight with two, and parties bringing two dogs have found it smaller than expected. The main double bed is noticeably narrower than a standard double and comes up repeatedly; if you are sharing, plan for it. A couple of stays have also reported floors and carpets that had not been properly cleaned on arrival, which matters more when a dog will be lying on them.
One thing specific to a working farm: geese range across the parking area and around the cottages, and the droppings they leave have been a real irritation for guests who were themselves asked to clear up after their own dog. There is also no mobile signal on site and no on-site contact out of hours. For a couple with one dog who want a private beach, a safe field and coastal walking from the door, it is a good fit, and it earns a 4.4/5 paw rating.
