Miller's Cottage, Seahouses

Miller's Cottage is a whole-house let on Main Street in North Sunderland, the village that runs into Seahouses harbour. For a dog it is a strong location: the Northumberland coast path, Bamburgh beach and the harbour walks are all within easy reach, and there is an enclosed courtyard at the back for last thing at night. It earns a 4.5/5 paw rating.

The cottage is set up for self-catering families, with a washing machine, a large fridge and freezer and plenty of kitchen kit - the practical things that matter when a wet dog and a week of walking are involved. Guests travelling with a dog describe a comfortable, well-equipped base that is easy to come back to, with public footpaths running straight from the village and Holy Island, Bamburgh Castle and the Grace Darling museum all within an easy drive.

Reports from dog owners are thin on the ground here, though, and the wider reviews raise a consistent problem that anyone bringing a pet should weigh up. Cleaning between guests is the cottage's weak point, and it shows up specifically as dog hair: guests have repeatedly found hair on the sofas and chairs on arrival, along with dust, items left behind by previous parties and bedding that had not always been changed. If your dog has an allergy, or you would rather not start a holiday with a vacuum cleaner, plan on checking the soft furnishings before you settle in.

One other thing to know: the outside light on the back wall has been reported as not working, which leaves the courtyard dark for late-night trips out. Torches are provided, but a head torch of your own would not go amiss.

Best suited to a family bringing a dog to the Northumberland coast who want space and a proper kitchen, and who will not be put off by giving the place a once-over on arrival.
